Rich Kane, Poor Kane
Citizen Kane, as we know, is one of the most wonderful flowers in the field of movies. In this movie, beginning with the death of the press magnate, Kane, we get to know the press magnate’s whole life through the narration of five different people. In this essay, I will explain this press magnate’s rich but lonely life without true love. Looking through Kane’s whole life, on his way of seeking for enormous wealth and his remarkable power and influence, we see that he lost much love. When Kane was a little boy, life is tough for his family, and he can only play with an old sled in a snowy and freezing winter, but little Kane has a happy childhood with his mother. An accident windfall causes him to leave home and step into high society. If Kane is forced to give up his happy childhood, later in his young manhood, he spares no effort to strive for wealth and power. He even sacrifices his family life which could have been full of love. He marries the niece of the President, Emily. At the beginning of their marriage, they talk with each other at table. Gradually, Kane reads his newspaper instead of talking with Emily. At last, both of them read newspapers during meal time, and they don’t talk with each other again. Ironically, Kane reads his own newspaper, while Emily reads his opponent’s newspaper. There is no doubt that their marriage will end unhappily. So, in order to cast off poverty, little Kane loses his happy childhood and in order to be wealthy and powerful, he chooses a political marriage. During his married life, he spares no effort to be the most successful person instead of looking after his wife well. He misses much love during his young manhood. But Kane is not a piece of stone without any human feeling. After Kane becomes successful in the newspaper field of the newspaper press, he thinks of his hometown in a search for his youth. Then he meets Susan, a young and lovely girl, and falls in love with her. Susan is completely different from Emily. She has no noble temperament but she is pure and kind. What’s more she makes Kane forget his loneliness and he is happy with her. So Kane builds her a great theater and helps her to be a singer to make her the happiest woman in the world. It is obvious that Kane loves Susan. But his love is always based on himself. When Susan failed in her first performance and never wants to sing again, he forces her to keep singing, which makes Susan so miserable that she even chooses to commit suicide. Kane builds a huge and luxurious manor, but she wants to enjoy life in big cities. At last, Susan cannot bear this life and leaves Kane. In this love affair, we can see that Kane obviously loves Susan, but in a completely wrong way. He is selfish and desires to possess others. He always loves Susan in his own way instead of thinking about what she really likes. So at last he loses love again, and lives a lonely life from then on. To conclude, in Kane’s whole life, he wins in his career, but he also loses the loves of his life despite all his best. He wins everything to be a rich man, and then he ruins everything and becomes a poor man. At the end of his life, his only happiness is that glass ball he holds, the memory of a happy childhood with his family and his old rose bud sled. This is the whole life of citizen Kane.
